Why Families Across the Fox Valley Are Choosing Private Pay Speech Therapy
Meghan Gallardo providing private pay speech therapy and communication coaching in Appleton and the Fox Valley
If you are searching for private speech therapy in Appleton, AAC support in the Fox Valley, adult communication coaching, or individualized speech and communication support near Appleton, Menasha, Neenah, Green Bay, or surrounding communities, you may have noticed something: there are many wonderful services available, yet families often still tell me:
“Something just isn't quite fitting, ” or even “This is not working.”
After nearly two decades as a speech-language pathologist, I have worked in hospitals, clinics, schools, early intervention, virtual settings, and private practice. I have worked with toddlers saying their first words, children with autism, AAC users, teenagers learning self-advocacy, adults navigating relationships and workplace communication, and families trying to make everyday life feel calmer and more connected.
And the one paramount thing I have learned over the years is this:
Communication does not happen only in a therapy room.
It happens at breakfast tables. In grocery stores. In cars. During difficult transitions. During family routines. During friendships. During meltdowns. During ordinary Tuesday afternoons.
That is one reason many families throughout the Fox Valley area choose a private pay speech therapy model.
Not because one system is "better, “ but simply because sometimes people need something different.
First: Private Pay Is Not Better, But It Is Different
I want to say this first because I believe deeply in honesty.
Schools matter, and school therapy matters.
Birth-to-Three matters.
Insurance-based clinics matter.
Hospitals matter.
Many families receive incredible support through these systems, and I have actually worked inside each of those models over the years.
But sometimes families reach a point where they want:
a smaller caseload
more flexibility
support outside traditional models
family guidance
home and community carryover
longer-term relationships
support that does not always fit neatly into a billing code
That is often where private pay can become a wonderful option.
One Common Misconception: "We Already Have Therapy"
I have had multiple families contact me and share:
"We already receive school speech."
"We already have Birth-to-Three."
"We already have therapy services."
But we need more help.
Private pay is not always about more therapy. Many times, it is about supporting communication differently.
Sometimes support looks like:
Helping parents understand AAC outside of appointments.
Confidence building after learning new strategies for speech sounds or fluency.
Helping a teenager navigate friendships and social boundaries.
Supporting a young adult learning workplace communication.
Helping families create calmer transitions and routines.
Attending meetings and helping bridge communication across settings.
Helping someone write an email asking for support.
Helping an adult navigate sensory needs and advocate at work.
Sometimes families simply want someone to sit beside them and help answer:
"Okay… what do we do now?"
What Makes My Practice Different?
I intentionally keep my caseload small and flexible, and that is something I chose very deliberately early on. I realized I was never interested in building the biggest clinic or seeing as many people as possible. What I love most is getting to truly know people and their families over time. Communication is not static. Children grow. Teenagers become young adults. Life changes, needs change, and support naturally evolves along the way.
Many of the families I work with stay connected for years because what support looks like often shifts over time. At one point, it may involve direct speech therapy. Later, it may become parent coaching, helping someone navigate school transitions, supporting self-advocacy, preparing for work or college, or simply helping communication feel easier and life feel calmer. One of the things I value most about private pay is the flexibility to meet people where they actually are when they need it, not just where a treatment plan says they should be.
The Work I Do Does Not Always Fit Into One Box
Over the years, after working in different settings, I started noticing patterns. Families were often receiving wonderful services and working incredibly hard, yet many still found themselves saying, "Something still feels difficult." Not because anyone was doing anything wrong, but because communication and life rarely fit neatly into categories.
A child with apraxia may also be navigating sensory differences, regulation challenges, AAC supports, family stress, or transitions. A teenager may be learning self-advocacy and social communication while trying to understand their own neurodivergence. An adult may be navigating workplace communication or finally understanding themselves in a new way.
I realized that some of the support families needed did not always fit naturally into a billing code or traditional therapy model.
So I created something different.
One of the things families appreciate most about my private pay speech therapy and communication coaching model in Appleton and the Fox Valley is flexibility. There is no predetermined number of sessions or rigid pathway. Sometimes support is weekly. Sometimes it changes with life. Sometimes families simply need to reach out with a quick question, send an email, brainstorm a difficult situation, or reconnect when a new challenge appears. Even when we are not actively meeting, the relationship and support often remain available.
Because life and communication change and sometimes people simply need someone who already knows their story.
Why Families Throughout Appleton and the Fox Valley Reach Out
Families often tell me, "We just want someone to see the whole picture." They are not only looking for support with speech sounds or goals on paper. They want someone who sees their child, teen, or loved one as a whole person, with unique strengths, sensory needs, personality traits, communication styles, challenges, and family experiences that all shape the way communication develops. After many years in this field, I have learned that authentic communication is about much more than words. It is about connection, understanding, and helping people feel seen.
